The GRIGIO filbert brush, series 7495, from da Vinci is an artist's brush for oil and acrylic paints. You can use it to cover areas, blend transitions and draw finer lines with the edge. According to the manufacturer, the filling is a mix of different synthetic fibres with a slightly rough texture. They are very elastic and release the paint evenly, in a controlled and flowing way. This also makes the brush well suited to thicker paints.

GRIGIO is intended as a synthetic alternative to natural mongoose bristles. According to the manufacturer, the brush is vegan. As well as oil and acrylic, you can also use it for tempera and gouache.

Working with the filbert

The filbert is flat with a rounded tip. Use the broad side to apply paint over larger areas, the edge to draw narrower lines, and the rounded tip to help soften the edges. Load the paint only to half the length of the hair and wipe off excess on the edge of the palette. This keeps the paint release even and stops paint collecting at the ferrule. The long handle lets you work with a little distance from the canvas.

Choosing a size and caring for your brush

Choose the size from the options: narrower brushes suit smaller formats and details, broader ones larger areas. Besides the filbert, the GRIGIO range also includes flat and round brushes. The filbert sits in between if you want to handle both areas and lines with one brush. Rinse out acrylic straight after painting, as dried paint in the ferrule is very hard to remove and splays the fibres. Leave the brush to dry lying flat so that no water runs into the ferrule.
