da Vinci GRIGIO series 495 – fan brush for oil and acrylic
The GRIGIO fan brush series 495 from da Vinci belongs to the GRIGIO SYNTHETICS range of brushes for oil and acrylic paints. The synthetic fibres are slightly roughened, so they hold plenty of paint. With the fan shape you can paint textures such as grass, foliage or clouds, blend transitions, or apply paint loosely and in transparent layers.
The brush has a long, hexagonal handle in burgundy. The long handle lets you work comfortably at a bit of a distance from the easel. According to da Vinci, the brush is vegan.
Working with the fan brush
For grass or fur, pick up only a little paint and pull the fan upwards with its edge in short strokes. Dab foliage and treetops with the flat side. To blend two still-wet areas of paint softly into each other, stroke lightly over the boundary with the clean, dry fan. The most common mistake is too much paint on the brush: the fibres stick together and you get blotches instead of fine textures. So wipe the brush off on the edge of the palette first.
Which size?
No. 1 is the narrower fan for smaller formats and details, while no. 3 covers larger areas. The GRIGIO range includes other shapes, such as round, flat, angled or filbert. Use the fan for textures and soft transitions, and one of these other shapes for contours and strong, opaque application.
