da Vinci Fan Brush Series 408 – Badger Hair for Gilding and Effects

The da Vinci badger hair fan brush, series 408, is a gilding brush with badger hair set in a fan shape. You can use it to gild coves, for example on baroque frames, and for effects and textures in painting and decorative work.

The badger hair is slightly wavy and sits in a silver ferrule that holds the hairs firmly in place. The long, red-lacquered wooden handle keeps your hand away from the work surface and lets you guide the brush steadily. The fan width of size 1 is approx. 6 cm. This lets you cover wider areas in one stroke without pressing too hard. According to the manufacturer, the brush is made at the Defet brush workshop in Nuremberg.

Using the fan brush

For gilding, the fan brush suits coves and mouldings because the broad hair follows the curve. For effects and textures, work with little paint: use the edge of the fan to pull grasses, foliage or treetops, and brush lightly over wet paint to blend transitions. This brush is also used for imitation finishes, graining and marbling.

Care and choosing a size

Badger hair is a natural hair. With proper care, the brush lasts a long time. Clean it thoroughly after use, reshape the hair and store it so that the fan is not squashed. Series 408 is available in several sizes. This brush is size 1 with a fan width of approx. 6 cm. For narrow mouldings and fine work, choose a smaller size; for large areas, a wider one.
