The JAXELL Soft Pastels set of 12 from Honsell contains 12 soft, artist-quality pastel sticks for drawing, shading and colour gradients. The pastels are highly pigmented, so even light pressure gives you opaque colour on the paper. The compact set suits small projects, working on the go and getting started with pastel painting.

The pastels are soft and blend easily. You can also work them with water or combine them with watercolour, red chalk and charcoal. Each pastel measures 10 × 10 × 64 mm.

Working with soft pastels

Use the broad side of the square stick to cover areas quickly, and the edge to draw lines and add accents. To blend, use a finger, a blending stump or a piece of paper. This gives soft transitions and shading. If you dissolve the colour with a damp brush, you get transparent, watercolour-like areas; for this you need paper that can take moisture. Soft pastels remain delicate and produce dust. Protect finished work with fixative or place it under interleaving paper.

Which set to choose

With 12 colours you can mix intermediate shades by layering pastels and blending them. That is enough for sketches, studies and small formats. For a wider range of colours, the series is also available with 24, 36, 48 and 60 pastels, as well as a set of 12 in browns only or greys only.
