The Faber-Castell Pitt Monochrome Set (art. no. 112976) is a 21-piece drawing set in a metal tin for drawings in black, white and earth tones such as sanguine and sepia. It contains pencils, pastel pencils, pastel chalks, charcoal, oil-based pencils, a kneadable eraser and a paper stump. You can take the set and tin with you to draw, without having to hunt for individual pencils.

According to Faber-Castell, the Pitt Monochrome chalks are harder than ordinary pastel chalks for drawing use. When blended, the lines therefore do not dissolve completely, and you keep your contours. The sanguine and sepia chalks are complemented by grease-free and oil-based drawing pencils for details and lines.

Working with the set

A tried-and-tested order: first lay in areas and shadows with chalk or charcoal, as these materials release a lot of colour. Blend them into soft gradients with the paper stump. Then add details and contours with the graphite, pastel and oil-based pencils. With the kneadable eraser you lift out highlights by dabbing it onto the area rather than rubbing. Use the oil-based pencils for lines that should stay put when blended.

Difference from the 12-piece set

Faber-Castell also offers the Pitt Monochrome Set with 12 pieces. The 21-piece set includes more material: a second Castell 9000 pencil, vine charcoal and drawing charcoal sticks, more pastel chalks and pastel pencils, and a paper stump. If you want to work over large areas with charcoal and chalk and blend them, the larger set is the better fit.
