KOH-I-NOOR GIOCONDA – 12 soft pastel pencils for fine lines and detail

GIOCONDA pastel pencils from KOH-I-NOOR are soft pastel chalk pencils in a cedarwood casing. You can use them to draw outlines, shading and fine detail in pastel. The set contains 12 colours in a metal tin.

The lead is made of synthetic chalk and is 4.2 mm in diameter. The wooden casing lets you apply colour with more control than with a solid pastel stick. For portraits, animal drawings and landscapes, the pencils are practical when you want to work up details that are hard to achieve with a broad pastel stick. According to the manufacturer, they are particularly suitable for thin lines and outlines.

Working with the pastel pencils

A slightly rough pastel paper is a good choice, as the pigments adhere better to the surface. Lay in areas loosely first and build up the colour in layers. Soft transitions are created when you blend with your finger, a paper stump or a pastel brush. It is best to add outlines and small details last, while the point is still fine. The leads are soft: sharpen the pencils carefully and do not press too hard when drawing, so the point does not break off.
