Schmincke AKADEMIE Watercolour Half Pans – Single Colours for Refilling and Extending Your Palette

Schmincke AKADEMIE watercolour paints are available as single colours in half pans (½ pan). You can use them to refill individual colours in your watercolour box or to put together your own palette. Choose your colour from the options; according to Schmincke, the range comprises 40 shades.

The binder is natural gum arabic, and the paints are cadmium-free and cobalt-free. Dried paint can be re-wetted with water, so you can keep using pans that have dried out. The range is aimed at beginners, students and experienced watercolour painters. Schmincke HORADAM watercolour paints can be mixed with AKADEMIE.

Working with half pans

Moisten the pan with a few drops of water and let it soften briefly. Then pick up paint with a wet brush and mix it on the palette or directly on the paper. Little water gives strong tones, more water gives transparent ones. Because the paint can be re-wetted, you do not need to throw away leftover paint on the palette. Rinse the brush thoroughly when changing colours so that your mixes stay clean.

Choosing your colours

The half pans fit metal and travel boxes designed for this size. Use them to fill empty spaces or to replace used-up colours. Lightfastness and opacity differ from shade to shade; for colours that will be exposed to light for a long time, it is worth checking the manufacturer's colour chart.
