Schmincke Acryl Fluid Medium – gloss painting medium for acrylic paints

The Fluid Medium gloss from Schmincke (art. no. 50552) is a free-flowing painting medium that you mix into your acrylic paints. It makes the paint more fluid, increases gloss and transparency, and dries almost clear and glossy. It also slows drying, so you have longer to paint and blend. It also improves adhesion to the painting surface.

Schmincke recommends the medium especially for work over large areas. Because the paint becomes more transparent with more medium, you can also use it for glazing: the lower paint layer then shows through the upper one.

Working with the Fluid Medium

Put some acrylic paint on the palette and gradually mix in the medium until the flow and transparency suit your picture. Schmincke does not specify a fixed mixing ratio. It is therefore best to try the mixture first on an offcut of your painting surface. Acrylic mediums usually look milky when wet and only turn clear as they dry, so wait until the test piece is dry before judging the result. Clean brushes and palette with water while the paint and medium are still wet. Dried acrylic is very hard to remove.

Gloss, satin or Acryl Painting Medium?

Schmincke also makes the Fluid Medium in a satin version (art. no. 50553). Choose it if you want the surface to be less glossy. The Acryl Painting Medium (art. no. 50550) from the same range of auxiliaries also dries clear and is recommended by Schmincke mainly for layered painting. If your main aim is to slow down drying, the Schmincke range also includes retarders.
