Schmincke Acrylic Retarder – more time for wet-in-wet acrylic painting

Schmincke Acrylic Retarder is a gel-like painting medium that slows the drying of acrylic paints. Your paint stays workable for longer, which helps with soft transitions and wet-in-wet painting. The retarder is water-miscible and ready to use.

The 60 ml bottle is enough to try out the effect at your leisure, as you only need a small proportion of the paint quantity for a noticeable delay.

How to dose the retarder

Adding around 20 % extends the drying time of the paint by approx. 50 %. You should not add more than 30 %, and the retarder must not be used neat. It does not form a film itself, so do not exceed the maximum amount. It is best mixed with your acrylic paints on a separate palette. A test on your painting surface will show you how the mixture performs.

Application, cleaning and storage

Do not use the retarder if the surface or room temperature is below 10 °C. Clean tools with water, or water and soap, straight after use. Dried-on acrylic paint can be removed with Schmincke brush cleaner. Close the bottle immediately after use, store it in a cool, dry place and protect it from frost.

When is this retarder enough?

Acrylic Retarder is intended for longer wet-in-wet painting. If you need an even stronger delay, Schmincke offers the SUPER Retarder: it can be added at up to 50 % and, at 20 %, extends the drying time by approx. 75 %.
