Schmincke Watercolour Varnish – final varnish against dust and moisture

Schmincke watercolour varnish is a final varnish for technical watercolour work. It protects finished pieces against dust and moisture. The varnish is colourless, non-yellowing and dries very quickly. It is alcohol-based and, according to the manufacturer, is applied with a fixative sprayer or atomiser.

The bottle contains 60 ml. According to the manufacturer, the finish is glossy and can vary depending on the surface, painting technique and layer thickness. So you can test on a swatch to see how the surface looks on your work.

Applying the varnish

Shake the bottle well before use. The varnish is ready to use and can be thinned with ethanol if needed. It goes on most evenly with an atomiser or fixative sprayer. The watercolour work should be completely dry beforehand. Work in a well-ventilated room or outdoors and keep away from sources of ignition, as the varnish is highly flammable.

• Spray thinly and evenly; two thin coats are better than one thick coat
• Clean the atomiser and equipment with alcohol straight after use
• Do not mix with white spirit-based varnishes
• Store in a cool, dry place and protect from frost

Effect on colour and paper

A varnish can deepen colours and make watercolour paper look more transparent. Apply the varnish sparingly and test it on a swatch first before treating the finished painting.
