Schmincke Terpin – thinning oil paint and cleaning painting tools

Schmincke Terpin is a solvent blend for oil painting. You use it to thin oil paint and to clean brushes, palettes and other tools. Terpin is almost odourless, which makes working in the studio or at the kitchen table more pleasant than with strong-smelling solvents.

The product is intended for two jobs: making paint more workable and getting tools clean. It is not suitable for thinning oil painting mediums and varnishes, nor for dissolving natural resins, synthetic resins or varnishes. You need a different product for that.

How to use Terpin

To thin, add only a little Terpin to the paint on the palette and mix it in with the brush. This makes the paint more workable, for example for thinner applications. To clean, first wipe excess paint from the brush with a paper towel, then rinse it in a container of Terpin. You can then wash it again with brush soap and water. Palettes and other tools can be cleaned in the same way.

Storage and test

Schmincke recommends closing the container immediately after use and storing it in a cool, dry place. As surfaces and paints behave differently, it is sensible to do your own tests before using Terpin on a delicate piece.
