BeaverCraft K9/10 Sweep 9 gouge – straight carving gouge for stock removal and chip carving
The BeaverCraft K9/10 is a compact, straight gouge (Sweep No. 9) for wood carving. Its rounded profile lets you remove wood precisely, create patterns and textures, and cut notches. The blade is 80 mm long and the handle 115 mm. The short build helps you keep control of the gouge when doing detailed work. The handle is made of ash and impregnated with oil. According to the manufacturer, the gouge is suitable for beginners and professional wood carvers.
The blade width of 10 mm determines the width of the groove you cut with a single stroke. The fine edge dulls more quickly in harder wood, so it is best to work in softer wood.
Working with the gouge
Clamp the workpiece firmly or secure it on a non-slip surface. Drive the gouge with hand pressure only and always cut away from your body. Keep your other hand behind the cutting edge. Work with the grain of the wood and take several thin shavings rather than one deep cut, so the wood does not tear out. For patterns and textures, place the curved cuts side by side; for notches, cut into the surface.
Blade care
The blade is made of carbon steel. Wipe it dry after carving and, for longer storage, apply a thin film of oil to prevent rust. Put the gouge down so that the cutting edge does not strike metal or stone.
