BeaverCraft SK2 Spoon Carving Knife – Hook Knife with a 30 mm Curve for Spoons and Bowls

The BeaverCraft SK2 spoon carving knife is a hook knife for carving wooden spoons and other hollow shapes. The curved carbon steel blade has a curve diameter of 30 mm and is ground on one side. The knife is made for right-handers; BeaverCraft makes separate models for left-handers.

The handle is made of ash and treated with linseed oil. The rounded tip bites easily into the wood and shapes the bowl of the spoon.

Hollowing out a spoon

Clamp the blank firmly, or hold it so that your holding hand is never in the line of the cut. Place the blade at the edge of the bowl and draw it towards the deepest point in thin shavings, following the grain. Cutting against the grain tears the wood easily. It is better to work in several shallow strokes than one deep one, so you keep control of the shape.

Choosing the size and wood

With a 30 mm curve you hollow out a larger bowl than with the smaller SK1 model (25 mm), for example for cooking spoons or deeper bowls. For small spoons and tight curves, the 25 mm knife is the better choice. According to BeaverCraft, the 20° sharpening angle is particularly suited to soft woods such as lime or alder. The fine edge dulls more quickly on hardwood.

Care

Carbon steel rusts. Store the knife in a dry place and wipe the blade after carving. A thin film of oil, e.g. camellia oil, protects it from rust.
