BeaverCraft LS5 Paddle Strop – Leather and Sandpaper for Curved Blades

The BeaverCraft LS5 is a double-sided paddle strop for polishing and lightly resharpening spoon knives, hook knives and gouges. The paddle shape suits the curved profiles of these tools, so you can guide the blade around the curve.

The base is made of ash wood. One side has leather for polishing, the other has replaceable sandpaper for light sharpening. According to the manufacturer, a green-grey polishing compound and two sheets of spare sandpaper are included, along with a tutorial. You can get started straight after unpacking.

Working with the paddle

For polishing, apply a thin layer of polishing compound to the leather side. Lay the blade down with the spine leading and the edge facing backwards, and pull it over the leather with light pressure. Never draw the blade edge first, or you will cut into the leather. With hook knives and spoon knives, run the paddle along the inside of the curve. Keep your fingers behind the edge, as the blades are sharp.

Which side for what?

The two sides have different jobs, and you use them one after the other.

• Leather side with polishing compound: polishes the edge and strops it when it has only dulled slightly
• Sandpaper side: sharpens lightly when polishing alone is no longer enough
• Then strop the blade on the leather again
• Once the sandpaper is worn, replace it with one of the two spare sheets
