The BeaverCraft S01 is a spoon carving set for right-handers, for carving wooden spoons and other hollow shapes by hand. The set includes a carving knife for shaping the handle and body, a spoon knife (hook knife) for hollowing out the bowl and a leather strop with polishing compound for stropping the blades.

According to the manufacturer, the blades are made of high-strength carbon steel and are supplied sharpened, and the handles are made of ash wood. The spoon knife is intended for right-handers only. BeaverCraft offers a separate version for left-handers.

Carving a spoon with the set

Draw the spoon shape on the wooden blank and first rough it out with the carving knife: handle, neck and the outer shape of the bowl. Softwood is easier to cut than hardwood and is suitable for your first spoons. Then hollow out the bowl with the spoon knife. With the rounded, curved blade you remove the wood in small, controlled strokes. Never put your free hand in the cutting direction, and wear cut-resistant gloves at every stage. If you later want to carve finer details, you can add a smaller detail knife to the set.

Stropping and caring for the blades

Carving becomes more dangerous when the blade is blunt, because you then need more force. Apply some polishing compound to the leather strop and draw the edge over the leather at a shallow angle, spine of the blade leading. With the spoon knife, roll the curved blade carefully as you strop. After carving, wipe the blades dry and rub them with camellia oil so that the carbon steel does not rust.

The blades are very sharp, so use them with care. Cut protection (gloves) is advisable. Carbon steel blades can rust: store them dry and rub the blades regularly with camellia oil.
