BeaverCraft S18X – 8-piece wood carving set with walnut handles in a leather roll
The BeaverCraft S18X is a wood carving set with 8 tools and walnut handles. It covers carving in wood from rough removal of material to fine detail work. The blades are made of 1066 carbon steel, and the tools are stored in a genuine leather tool roll. A leather strop and polishing compound for resharpening are included.
The walnut handles are treated with natural linseed oil. The cutting bevel is 20°. According to BeaverCraft, this is suitable for softwood and not recommended for hardwood, because the fine edge dulls faster there.
Which tool for which job?
The set contains a suitable tool for every stage, so you can work a project from the rough shape to the finest detail with one set.
- Roughing knife: removes wood in broad strokes
- Carving knife and sloyd knife: for shapes, surfaces and edges
- Detail knife: for fine outlines and small areas
- 2 chip carving knives: for geometric chip carving patterns
- Spoon knife: for hollowing out spoons and bowls
- Gouge: for grooves and hollows
Sharpening with the leather strop and polishing compound
A sharp blade cuts with less force and slips less often. Strop the blade regularly, before it becomes noticeably dull. To do so, apply a little polishing compound thinly to the leather strop. Lay the blade flat and pull it over the leather with the spine leading, never the edge. That way you won't cut into the leather. Check the edge from time to time on a test piece. With hardwood the 20° edge dulls faster, so it is best to stick to softwood with this set.
