Efco Soapstone Assorted, 1.5 kg – Raw Stones for Carving

Efco assorted soapstone, 1.5 kg – raw stones for filing and sanding

Efco assorted soapstone is a set of 1.5 kg of raw stones in mixed colours and sizes for carving, filing and sanding. Soapstone is a soft natural stone. You can shape it with simple tools, without any special equipment.

The pieces are fairly small. They suit mini figures, small animals, amulets and pendants. As the set contains several stones, it also works well for lessons, groups and holiday activities. The colours and shapes of the stones vary, and you cannot choose the selection.

Working soapstone

Start with a file or rasp and work out the rough shape. Then sand with sandpaper, going from coarse to fine grit. Wet sanding keeps dust down and gives a smoother surface. Do not breathe in dry dust when filing and sanding; it is best to work with water or in a well-ventilated area. Finally, rub the piece with soapstone wax or oil. This deepens the colour and brings out the grain more clearly.

Choosing what to make

As the pieces are small, it is best to plan simple shapes such as pendants, worry stones or small animals. For large sculptures you need larger single blocks. Fine details come quickly on small stones, but thin areas break more easily. Leave enough material on ears, feet or wings, and thin them down only at the end.
