Botz 9520 Wasserfall liquid glaze – crystal flecks on a green base

With Wasserfall (9520) from Botz, generous crystal flecks in various shades of blue blend into a green base, some with matt, pale crystal centres. Flow effects develop on steeply sloping surfaces. The surface fires to a satin finish.

Wasserfall belongs to the Botz earthenware series with a firing range of 1020–1060 °C. The glaze therefore suits clay that you fire at the lower temperature range. It shows its effect best on pieces with slopes and curves, such as bowls, vases or plant pot covers: there the glaze runs gently downwards and the flecks stretch out lengthways. On horizontal surfaces they tend to stay round.

Application and firing

• Stir the glaze well and thin with water if needed
• Apply with a brush to bisque-fired ceramic (at least 950 °C), leave to dry thoroughly and repeat if needed – Botz generally gives 2–3 coats for its glazes
• Stable in the firing range of 1020–1060 °C, can be fired up to 1100 °C

Avoiding common mistakes

Because this glaze is meant to flow, it should not be applied right down to the foot. Apply it more thinly towards the bottom and leave a margin unglazed. According to Botz, a glaze runs more if it is applied too thickly or fired too hot. If you fire at the upper end, up to 1100 °C, the flow increases. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash, for example Botz kiln wash art. no. 90108. If the glaze has thickened in the pot, stir it back up with a little water.
