Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-212 Speckled Moody Blue – speckled effect glaze with white flecks

Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-212 Speckled Moody Blue is a speckled effect glaze with white flecks for ceramics and stoneware. You apply it with a brush, and it comes in a 236 ml container. After firing the surface is glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze.

You control how intense the colour becomes through the number of coats: one coat looks transparent, and with 2–3 coats the surface becomes opaque. The glaze is slightly viscous, so it works as well for even areas as for targeted brushwork. It belongs to the Stroke & Coat Speckled series, which is available in other colours.

Applying the glaze

The glaze is intended for brush application. Start on clean, dust-free ceramic and stir the glaze well before applying. If you want an opaque finish, work with several thin coats rather than one thick one. Applying it too thickly is a common mistake and can cause running during firing.

Firing and colour effect

Moody Blue is suitable for low-fire and high-fire. In a low firing at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the colour stays intense and the speckles are clearly visible. In a high firing, for example at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) up to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the glaze lightens while the speckles remain. A test piece will show you beforehand how the colour looks in your kiln and on your clay body.

Dinnerware and labelling

According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe after firing. The ACMI AP seal stands, according to ACMI, for a product with no hazard labelling. Both apply when used as directed by the manufacturer and once fully fired.

You will also need: a soft brush for applying, bisque-fired ceramic or stoneware, and a kiln that reaches cone 06 to cone 10.
