Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-215 Speckled Tuxedo – speckled brush-on glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-215 Speckled Tuxedo is an effect glaze with white speckles for ceramics and stoneware. You apply it with a brush and get a glossy, high-contrast surface, with no need for an additional clear glaze. The jar contains 236 ml.
The glaze is intensely pigmented and slightly viscous. This makes precise brushwork easier and gives even, opaque coverage. It belongs to the Mayco Stroke & Coat Speckled series, which comprises effect glazes with speckles in various colours. SP-215 differs from the other colours in the series in its Tuxedo shade.
Application
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it to bisque-fired ware. You control how strong the colour looks by the number of coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next.
- 1 coat: slightly transparent effect
- 2–3 coats: strong, opaque surface with intense colour
Firing and effect of the speckles
Mayco gives the firing range as cone 06 to cone 10, i.e. low-fire and high-fire. In a low firing at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the speckles stay clearly visible and give strong contrasts. In a high firing, for example at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the glaze becomes somewhat darker and the speckles are retained. A test piece on your own clay body will show you beforehand how the glaze looks at your firing temperature.
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means the product is exempt from hazard labelling. Use the glaze as intended by Mayco.
