Mayco SP-231 Speckled The Blues – glossy speckled glaze with blue speckles
Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-231 Speckled The Blues is a glossy speckled glaze with blue speckles for earthenware and stoneware. It belongs to the Speckled Stroke & Coat range, whose colours have small speckles in contrasting colours. The glaze is brushed on straight from the 236 ml container and fires to a gloss finish without an additional clear glaze.
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that it is exempt from hazard labelling. One coat looks slightly translucent; with 2–3 coats you get a strong, opaque surface. This makes the glaze suitable for details and for even coverage.
Application
Stir the glaze well before use. Brush it evenly onto the clean, bisque-fired piece. With one coat the effect stays slightly transparent; for an opaque surface, apply 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next, otherwise the layer underneath will smear.
Firing and speckles
Stroke & Coat is suitable for cone 06 to 10, in oxidation and reduction firing. According to Mayco, the Speckled range is formulated for cone 06/05 (cone 06: approx. 998 °C, cone 05: approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At high temperatures the speckles can run. In a low firing they stay clearly visible and add contrast on the blue surface. If you fire higher, for example at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), make a test piece on your own clay first. That way you can see how the colour and speckles behave in your kiln.
