Mayco SP-253 Speckled Purple Haze – glossy speckled glaze with blue flecks
Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-253 Speckled Purple Haze is a ready-to-use brush-on effect glaze with blue flecks for earthenware and stoneware. The glaze fires glossy and needs no additional clear glaze. It can be used across a firing range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Its slightly viscous consistency suits fine brushwork as well as even, opaque coverage.
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP (Approved Product) seal means: non-hazardous (no labelling required).
Applying the glaze
The number of coats controls the colour effect: one coat looks slightly transparent, while 2–3 coats give a rich, opaque surface. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next, otherwise the layer underneath will smear. According to Mayco, you can apply Stroke & Coat to damp clay or to bisque-fired earthenware and stoneware.
Low or high firing?
Fired low at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the flecks stay clearly visible and create strong contrast. Mayco designs the Speckled glazes for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 °C and approx. 1,031 °C respectively, guide value per Orton chart). In a high firing, for example at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the glaze becomes slightly more transparent, the colour lightens a little and the flecks blend softly. So if you want sharply defined dots, fire low. For a softer, flowing effect, choose the high firing. A test tile on your own clay will show you the result beforehand.
