Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-99 Char-ming – black glaze for details and larger areas
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-99 Char-ming is a glossy black ceramic glaze applied with a brush. You can apply it to damp clay, to bisque ware (earthenware or stoneware) and to stoneware. The glaze is thick and heavily pigmented. It stays where you put it and does not run. That makes it suitable for fine lines, outlines and multicoloured designs.
One coat gives a translucent result; 2–3 coats give opaque coverage. SC-99 Char-ming is glossy after firing, so you do not need a clear glaze. The colours in the range can be mixed with one another. Thinned down, they give softer gradients and transparent effects.
Applying SC-99 Char-ming
Stir the glaze well before use. Apply it with a brush in even strokes and let each coat dry before applying the next. For a rich, opaque black you need 2–3 coats. With just one coat the result stays translucent. Leave a small area of the piece unglazed, for example the foot, so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
Firing and high firing
The normal firing range is cone 06/05 (cone 06 approx. 998 °C, cone 05 approx. 1031 °C, guide values per Orton chart). Mayco gives a firing range of cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) for Stroke & Coat. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) SC-99 stays opaque according to Mayco, but the colour darkens slightly. For high firing, a test piece is worthwhile.
Suitable for tableware?
According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal means: exempt from hazard labelling.
