Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-034 Chestnut Brown – warm chestnut brown underglaze
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-034 Chestnut Brown is an underglaze in a warm, earthy chestnut brown. You can use it to paint areas, lines, shading and floral motifs on ceramics that are then fired under a clear glaze. It belongs to the Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze series and is applied with a brush.
This brown shade suits natural, even areas of colour and fine details, for example twigs, leaves or outlines. With 2–3 coats you get an opaque area; with fewer coats the application stays more transparent.
Applying the underglaze
You can apply Chestnut Brown to wet clay, greenware or bisque. For patterns or a solid area, apply 2–3 coats with a brush. Let each coat dry before applying the next so that the colour does not dissolve again. Mayco describes two methods:
- On greenware or clay: paint, fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart), glaze with a clear glaze and fire to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- On bisque: paint, leave to dry, apply clear glaze and fire to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
Firing, finish and dinnerware
For the Fundamentals, Mayco gives a firing range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C), in each case as a guide value per Orton chart. Without glaze, the underglaze fires to a soft matt finish; under a clear glaze the surface becomes glossy. Fire the clear glaze at cone 06–05 on earthenware and at cone 5–10 on stoneware. To find out exactly how this shade of brown behaves at high temperatures, test it on a swatch of your own clay.
For dinnerware: Chestnut Brown is only suitable for dinnerware under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze it is not suitable for dinnerware. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal means non-hazardous (no labelling required).
