Mayco Underglaze UG-3 Baby Blue – light blue for decorating ceramics
Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-3 Baby Blue is a light blue underglaze for decorating ceramics: you paint lines, areas and gradients onto wet or leather-hard clay, onto greenware or onto bisque. The pot contains 59 ml.
Mayco Fundamentals underglazes have a firing range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). This means you can use them on both earthenware and stoneware.
Applying the underglaze
Stir or shake the colour well before use. Apply it with a brush in 2–3 coats and let each coat dry to the touch before applying the next. Thin coats cover more evenly than one thick coat, which is more likely to show marks as it dries. On clay or greenware, let the colour dry and fire to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). You can then apply a clear glaze and fire a second time.
What happens to the colour in the kiln
Unglazed, the underglaze fires to a soft matt; with a clear glaze the surface becomes glossy. At cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising firing, it stays matt without clear glaze. At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) oxidising and at cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) reducing, the colour becomes more concentrated. For these firings Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-001 Stoneware Clear.
Decorating tableware
According to Mayco, the underglaze is only suitable for tableware under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze it is not considered dinnerware safe. For cups and plates, therefore, cover the decorated surface completely with a suitable clear glaze.
