Proxxon GG 12 Engraving Set – Engraver with Mains Adaptor, Test Glass and Tool Bits
The Proxxon engraving set (art. no. 28635) contains everything you need to get started with engraving: the GG 12 engraver, a plug-in mains adaptor, a test glass, templates, an instruction booklet and six tool bits. Everything comes in a plastic case.
According to Proxxon, the GG 12 has a quiet, long-life special DC motor running at 20,000 revolutions per minute. The housing is made of glass-fibre-reinforced polyamide. At 145 mm long and 50 g (without cable), it sits in the hand like a thick pen, so you can work for longer periods without tiring.
Which bit for which job?
The six grinding bits in the set cover three ways of working. Here is how to choose the right bit:
- Diamond burrs (ball-shaped, 1.0 and 1.8 mm): for scoring and drawing fine lines
- Silicon carbide burrs (cone and bullet shape): for frosting
- Aluminium oxide burrs: for grinding and engraving
Getting started
Practise first on the test glass supplied before working on a piece of your own. Hold the tool like a pen and guide it with light pressure in steady strokes. Let the tool do the work, not the pressure of your hand: if you press too hard, the bit easily skips and the lines become untidy. The templates and instruction booklet give you first designs to try. Wear safety glasses when engraving. Keep the rotating tool bits in the small parts holder so that you do not lose them and the bits stay clean.
