Faber-Castell Colour Grip watercolour pencils, tin of 36, triangular

Faber-Castell Colour Grip set of 36 – water-soluble triangular colouring pencils in a metal tin

Faber-Castell Colour Grip pencils are water-soluble colouring pencils for drawing and for watercolour effects. The set contains 36 pencils in a sturdy metal tin, where you can keep them sorted and take them with you.

What sets them apart is the ergonomic triangular shape with a patented grip zone: it gives a secure hold and better control, even during longer sessions. The pencils are suitable for right-handed and left-handed users. Thanks to the special bonding, the lead is break-resistant, so it is less likely to snap inside the wood if the pencil is dropped. A name field on the pencil helps avoid mix-ups, at school for example. The colours are washable from most textiles.

Using the water-soluble pencils

Apply the colour dry first, as with any colouring pencil. Then blend the area with a damp brush and the colour takes on a watercolour look. Work with little water and build up gradually: paper that is too wet will cockle, especially thin drawing paper. Sturdier paper is better suited to wet work. You can combine dry and blended areas, for example soft backgrounds with fine lines over the top.

Which set to choose

Colour Grip pencils are available in a metal tin of 12, 24 and 36 pencils. With 36 pencils you have the widest choice and need to mix less when you want to lay down areas and gradients in many shades. The smaller sets are enough for getting started or for a school bag.
