Proxxon MICROFLAM MFB/E Torch – fine gas flame for soldering and brazing

The Proxxon MICROFLAM MFB/E torch (art. no. 28146) is a gas torch for very fine work: you can use it to solder, desolder, braze, heat, anneal and tin. You set the gas and air supply independently of each other. This gives you even, very fine flame shapes with temperatures up to 1,200 °C, and you can adapt the flame to small workpieces, for example jewellery or model making.

An electronic piezo crystal igniter lights the flame quickly, so you do not need a lighter. The tank holds 50 ml and lasts approx. 60 minutes of operation on a normal flame. You refill it with standard butane gas cartridges for lighters. The torch is supplied without gas.

Working with the torch

For a clean soldered joint, clean the parts first and apply flux if needed. Then heat the workpiece with the flame and apply the solder to the heated area, not directly into the flame. This lets the solder flow cleanly into the joint. With the separate gas and air control, you adjust the flame to the size of the workpiece: use a small flame for fine parts, and more power for larger parts or for brazing.

Refilling the gas

The tank is filled with standard butane gas cartridges for lighters. For longer jobs, plan to have a cartridge ready for refilling, and let the torch cool down completely first.

You will also need: a butane gas cartridge for lighters for filling, suitable solder and flux for your soldering work, and a fireproof work surface.

The torch is supplied without gas. Filling with butane gas is a hazard: only fill when the torch is cold and switched off, in a well-ventilated area and away from flames, sparks and other ignition sources. The flame reaches up to 1,200 °C. Never point it at people or flammable materials, do not leave the torch unattended while in use, and let it cool down before putting it away.
