ABIG Etching Needle Set – three point shapes with hardened tips in a tin
The ABIG etching needle set (art. no. 191000) contains three etching needles with wooden handles for etching and scratch work: a fine-point needle (no. 190100), a strong-point needle (no. 190200) and an oblique-oval needle (no. 190300). The needle tips are hardened. You can use them on surfaces such as plastic and metal.
The three needles are stored together in a tin. This keeps the tips protected, and you have every line width to hand while you work.
Which needle for what?
The fine-point needle draws the thinnest lines and suits details, fine hatching and contours. The strong-point needle makes bolder lines, which you can use for areas and clear outlines. The oblique-oval needle has a bevelled tip, so depending on how you hold it, you can draw broader or varying lines. If you work with all three needles, you can alternate line widths deliberately within a single piece.
Working with the etching needles
Hold the needle like a pencil and guide it with even pressure, as uneven pressure shows straight away in the line. Try each needle first on an offcut of the same material. The hardened tips last longer even on hard surfaces, but you should still put the needles back in the tin after use so the tips do not get knocked.
