BeaverCraft S14X – carving set with spoon knife, sloyd knife and gouge

The BeaverCraft S14X is a carving set with three tools for making spoons, figures and everyday objects from wood. It contains the SK5R spoon knife (right-handed), the C4 sloyd knife and the K8a/14 curved gouge. The handles are made of European walnut and the blades of 1066 carbon steel at 57–59 HRC. A leather case for the tools and a leather strop with polishing compound for honing and polishing the blades are included.

The cutting bevel is 20°. According to BeaverCraft, this suits softwood; the manufacturer does not recommend the set for hardwood, because the fine edge dulls more quickly there.

Which tool for which job

The three tools cover typical carving steps. The spoon knife is made for right-handed carvers, so left-handed carvers should bear this in mind.

• SK5R spoon knife: the rounded blade hollows out the bowls of spoons and small vessels.
• C4 sloyd knife: this all-round knife with a Scandi grind cuts outlines, chamfers and shapes from the wood.
• K8a/14 gouge: the curved blade cuts grooves and hollows and is suitable for decoration.

Carving and care

When carving, always guide the blade away from your body and from the hand holding the wood. Use softwood such as lime, as the 20° edge is designed for it. When the edge starts to lose its sharpness, apply a little polishing compound to the strop and draw the blade flat across the leather, spine first. Carbon steel can rust in damp conditions, so the blades should be stored dry in the case.

The knives are very sharp. Always wear gloves, or at least a thumb guard, when carving. Not recommended for hardwood.
