The COLINEO rigger brush from da Vinci's series 1221 is a round synthetic brush for fine lines, details and glazing techniques in oil and acrylic painting. The fibre blend consists of straight and wavy synthetic fibres of different lengths with extra fine tips. They hold plenty of paint, are springy and form a precise point. This brings the brush very close to a kolinsky red sable brush.

With the rigger you can draw long, even lines in a single stroke, for example for outlines, branches, grasses, rigging or lettering. The silver ferrule holds the fibres firmly in place. The long handle is made of water-resistant Hi-tech Multicolor plywood. Choose your size from the options.

Drawing clean lines

For the rigger to carry long lines, the paint has to flow. Thin oil paint with a little painting medium, and acrylic paint with water or acrylic medium, until it has the consistency of ink. Load the brush, wipe the fibres off against the side of the pot and shape the point. Then draw the brush in a single stroke with light pressure. Support your hand as you do so, for example with your little finger or a mahlstick, as this steadies the line. A typical mistake is paint that is too thick: it breaks up and the line becomes uneven.

What the rigger is used for

For glazes, apply the paint thinly and transparently and build up the effect in several layers. The fine point also helps with details such as eyelashes, joints or texture lines. For large areas and opaque paint application, a flat or round brush is the better choice. Clean the brush thoroughly after painting and never stand it on its fibres, so that the point keeps its shape.
