The Hahnemühle Britannia watercolour pad in 36 × 48 cm is a watercolour pad with 12 sheets of natural white paper (300 gsm) for wet techniques such as wet-on-wet painting, as well as for gouache, tempera and acrylic.

According to Hahnemühle, the 300 gsm paper lies very flat after wetting, and the hard surface makes the paint easy to apply. Because the pad is glued on all four sides, you do not need to stretch the paper first. The paper is acid-free, lightfast and has the highest ageing resistance, so your work keeps its look for a long time.

Working with the pad

Dampen the sheet with water, depending on your technique, and paint directly on the pad. For wet-on-wet painting, you work on the dampened paper and the colours flow softly into one another. Then let the sheet dry completely before removing it: insert a blunt knife into the unglued gap in the edge and run it carefully all the way round. If you remove it too early, the still-damp paper may cockle.

Which size to choose?

36 × 48 cm is a generous size for landscapes, flower studies or subjects with large areas of colour. For sketches and painting on the go, the smaller pads in the series are more practical: Britannia is also available in 24 × 32 cm and 30 × 40 cm, and in 42 × 56 cm for even larger works.
