The Hahnemühle Sumi-e pad was developed specially for traditional Japanese ink painting and calligraphy. At 80 gsm, the natural white paper is very absorbent and has a slightly rough surface that takes bold, flowing strokes well. This suits the characteristic, pared-down motifs of sumi-e, where every line expresses calm, movement and meditative concentration.

This painting technique originates in Chinese calligraphy and came to Japan with Zen monks in the 12th century. Today sumi-e is also popular in Europe as an artistic and meditative form of expression. The Hahnemühle FineArt paper is well suited to this technique.
