Faber-Castell Polychromos artists' coloured pencils, 48 in wooden case

Faber-Castell Polychromos 48 in wooden case – artists' coloured pencils with oil-based leads

The Faber-Castell Polychromos 48 set contains 48 artists' coloured pencils in a wooden case. You can draw fine detail and cover large areas with them: the Polychromos leads are soft and rich in colour, and blend and layer well.

The colours are smudge-proof and water-resistant, and according to the manufacturer they have very high lightfastness. Your drawings therefore keep their colour over time. The lead is 3.8 mm in diameter and is protected against breakage by SV bonding (special bonding). That is useful if a pencil is dropped or you press firmly.

Working with Polychromos

Start with light pressure and build up the colour in several thin layers. This preserves the tooth of the paper, and you can layer colours and blend them softly. For details, sharpen the pencil with a sharp sharpener; for larger areas, work with the side of the lead. Because the colours are smudge-proof and water-resistant, you can combine them with other media without the colour layer smearing.

Which set to choose

The 48 case is a broad basic range for portraits and animal and nature subjects. If 48 colours are not enough, Polychromos is also available as a 120 wooden case. You can buy individual colours you use often separately and build up your set bit by bit.
