The Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer artists' watercolour pencils in the tin of 36 (art. no. 117536) are water-soluble pencils for drawing, painting and watercolour work. You first draw dry, as with a coloured pencil, and then dissolve the colour with a wet brush, either in fine lines or over larger areas. Depending on the paper, the colour can be dissolved completely, according to Faber-Castell, and then behaves like classic watercolour paint.

The lead is 3.8 mm thick, gives a soft, rich stroke and is fully water-soluble. Faber-Castell describes the pigments as particularly lightfast and brilliant in colour, which matters for work that you later frame or hang. Thanks to the SV bonding (Sekural), the lead is firmly fixed in the wood and does not break as easily, even when sharpened. You store and carry the 36 pencils in the metal tin.

Working with watercolour pencils

You use the pencils in two steps: apply dry first, then blend with water. How far the colour dissolves depends on the paper.

• Lay in the sketch, hatching or areas of colour dry. The more colour you apply, the stronger the result will be later.
• Run a wet brush over the area until the strokes blend. With little water the line structure stays visible; with more water you get soft, transparent washes.
• Use watercolour paper. Thin drawing paper cockles quickly when wet.
• Let the first layer dry before adding details or darker tones on top.

Choosing a set

The series is available in metal tins of 12, 24, 36, 60 and 120 pencils. With 36 pencils you have a wide choice for mixing and for finely graded transitions. You can mix the colours on the paper with a brush and water. Faber-Castell also offers the pencils individually, so you can buy single colours to top up your set.
