The Faber-Castell Polychromos 120 wooden case is a set of 120 artists' colouring pencils for drawing and painting, suited to fine detail as well as larger areas. Polychromos pencils have a thick oil-based core, 3.8 mm in diameter. It gives a soft, richly pigmented stroke that lets you mix and blend colours easily.

The cores are smudge-proof and water-resistant: finished drawings do not smudge easily, and water does not dissolve the colour again. The colours have very high lightfastness. That matters if your work is to hang framed for a long time. The special SV bonding protects the cores against breakage.

Working with Polychromos pencils

Build up areas of colour in thin layers: start with light shades and add dark ones last. This way you mix shades directly on the paper and can blend transitions softly. For fine detail you need a well-kept point. Sharpen the thick core with a sharpener for thick pencils and do not press too hard when drawing, so that it does not break.

The wooden case

The 120 pencils lie on two levels in a wenge-coloured wooden case, varnished inside and out. This keeps the whole set together and lets you find colours quickly. When a pencil is used up, you can buy that colour individually. If you would rather start with fewer colours, Polychromos pencils are also available in a case of 48.
