Schmincke Aqua-Grund fein – white primer for watercolour

Schmincke Aqua-Grund fein is a white primer for watercolour work on grease-free surfaces such as canvas, card or wood. It dries to an elastic, matt and smooth film, giving you an even painting surface for your watercolour paints.

According to Schmincke, the primer is lightfast and resistant to ageing. That matters if your work is going to be displayed or stored long term. Choose your size from the options.

Priming with Aqua-Grund fein

The primer is ready to use and can be applied straight from the container. The surface must be free of grease, otherwise the coating will not adhere as well.

• Check the surface and remove any dust and grease
• Apply at least 3 coats undiluted
• Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next
• If you dilute it (maximum 10 % water), you will need more coats

Points to note

Apply several thin coats rather than one thick one, so that the film is even. As Aqua-Grund dries matt and smooth, it is intended for fine watercolour techniques. If you are working on an unfamiliar surface, it is worth making a small test piece with your watercolour paints before you start the whole picture.
