Faber-Castell Goldfaber 1221 – single pencil in your chosen grade
The Faber-Castell Goldfaber 1221 is a graphite pencil for writing, drawing and sketching, which you buy singly in the grade you need, from 6B to 4H. This way you can add to your drawing kit without buying a whole set. Choose the grade from the options.
The barrel is hexagonal, painted blue and has gold stripes. The shape sits comfortably in the hand, and the pencil does not roll away as easily on a flat work surface. The lead is break-resistant thanks to the special SV bonding, which helps in everyday use at school, in the office and in the studio if the pencil is dropped. According to Faber-Castell, the barrel is made of FSC-certified wood.
Which grade suits your use?
Soft pencils release more graphite and make darker lines, while hard pencils give lighter, fine lines. The pressure you apply when drawing and the surface of your paper also matter.
- 6B to 4B: extra soft, for strong shading, dark areas and expressive sketches
- 3B to B: for freehand drawing, outlines and softer transitions
- HB and F: for everyday writing and controlled lines
- H to 4H: for fine details, pale guidelines and precise preliminary drawings
Combining the grades
If you are starting out in drawing, HB, 2B and 4B work well together. Begin with a loose preliminary sketch in HB and add darker areas with the softer pencils. With hard grades, light pressure is enough to avoid grooves in the paper.
