HORADAM Naturals Trio Water – three watercolour paints made from earth pigments

The Trio Water from Schmincke's HORADAM Naturals range contains three watercolour paints in 5 ml tubes: 470 Indigofera, 530 Celadonite and 750 Vine black. According to Schmincke, the paints are made exclusively from natural earth pigments plus plant resins and saps, and are vegan. They dry matt and are mostly semi-transparent, combining properties of watercolour and gouache.

The set is a selection from the 16 shades in the HORADAM Naturals range, which is available in themed trios. You can use the three colours straight from the tube or thinned with water, and you can also mix them with all Schmincke watercolour and gouache paints if you want to extend your palette.

Working with Naturals paints

Squeeze a little paint from the tube onto a palette and thin it with water as needed. Applied straight, it looks stronger and more like gouache; with more water you get transparent watercolour layers. As the paints become water-soluble again after drying, you can reactivate dried-on residue on the palette later. According to Schmincke, they are suitable for all types of paper and card. If you use a lot of water, watercolour paper is worth choosing, as it absorbs moisture better.

The set suits you if you would like to try the HORADAM Naturals range first with three colours. Indigofera, Celadonite and Vine black give you a small, coordinated selection. You can add further shades from the Naturals range or mix in other Schmincke watercolour and gouache paints.
