HORADAM Naturals Trio Fire – vegan watercolour paints made from natural pigments

The Schmincke HORADAM Naturals Trio Fire is a set of three 5 ml tubes of watercolour paint in the shades 220 Kamala, 250 Curcuma and 320 Dragon's Blood. The paints combine properties of watercolour and gouache: they dry matt and are mostly semi-transparent. According to Schmincke, they are made exclusively from natural earth pigments and plant resins or saps and are vegan. Gum arabic is used as the binder.

The trio is a selection from the HORADAM Naturals range of 16 shades. Kamala is a transparent, golden orange with a yellow undertone, Curcuma a warm yellow. Dragon's Blood is the third shade in the set.

Working with Naturals paints

Squeeze the paint from the tube onto a palette and use it undiluted for more opaque tones or thinned with water for transparent glazes. The paints are water-soluble again after drying: you can reactivate dried paint left on the palette with a little water, so nothing needs to be thrown away. The texture is somewhat coarser than many classic watercolour paints, and the smell is subtle. The paints are suitable for paper and card. If you would like to judge the effect on your paper, make a small colour swatch first.

Mixing and extending

The Naturals shades can be mixed and combined with all Schmincke watercolour and gouache paints. This lets you extend the palette of your trio without losing the character of the colours. According to Schmincke, 15 of the 16 Naturals colours have good lightfastness with 3 to 5 stars.
