Schmincke HORADAM Deep Sea – 5 super granulating watercolour paints in tubes

The Schmincke "Deep Sea" set contains five HORADAM watercolour paints in deep-sea shades, each in a 5 ml tube. It belongs to the limited edition "Super Granulating Colours". Each shade combines at least two granulating pigments. This produces a very strong granulation effect with additional colour shifts and natural-looking textures across the painted area.

Paint from the tube is easy to dose. With 5 ml of each colour, you can try out the range at your leisure before deciding on larger quantities of individual shades.

Bringing out the granulation

The texture comes from the interplay of pigment and paper: the rougher the paper, the stronger the granulation effect. A watercolour paper with a pronounced surface texture therefore gets the most out of the set. Mix the paint from the tube with plenty of water and apply it as a fluid glaze. Let the area dry flat so that the pigments can settle into the paper texture. A test sheet shows you in advance how strongly each shade granulates on your paper.

The colours in the set

The five shades range from violet through indigo, blue and green to black, and suit subjects such as water, night or the deep sea. Schmincke gives the pigmentation for two of the colours:

• Tiefsee Blau 14953: pigments PB29, PG50, PV62; semi-transparent, non-staining, granulating, highest lightfastness rating
• Tiefsee Schwarz 14955: pigments PB35, PB74, PBk11; semi-opaque, non-staining, granulating, highest lightfastness rating
