JAXON Oil Pastels Set of 24 – Honsell, Ø 11 mm

JAXON Oil Pastels – Set of 24 Colours

The JAXON oil pastels from Honsell (art. no. 47424) have been around since 1957. The set contains 24 pastels with a diameter of 11 mm. They go on softly, cover well, give strong colour and are lightfast. You can use them on paper, card, canvas, wood and many other surfaces – for sketches, drawings and mixed media, in art lessons as well as at your own easel.

Oil pastel techniques

• Layering and blending: Apply colours over one another and blend them with your finger, a blending stump or a cloth.
• Scratching (sgraffito): Lay down a colourful layer, cover it with a dark one and scratch the design out with a wooden stick.
• Oil pastel and watercolour: Oil pastel repels water-based paint. Draw your lines first, then wash over them with watercolour or water-based paint – the lines stay visible.

Avoiding common mistakes

If you apply too many layers, the surface eventually becomes saturated and the colour just smears. Work from light to dark and add strong accents last. Oil pastels never dry out completely and remain sensitive to rubbing – store finished pictures with a sheet of glassine or baking parchment in between, or frame them behind glass. A slightly heavier paper with a light texture takes the colour better than thin copier paper.

Which set size? The JAXON oil pastel range also includes smaller and larger sets, for example with 12 or 48 colours. With 24 colours you have a broad basic palette with several reds, blues, greens and browns, from which you can mix further shades.
