JAXON Oil Pastels, Set of 12 – Basic Colours for Drawing and Blending

The Honsell JAXON set of 12 contains 12 round oil pastels, 11 mm in diameter, in assorted colours from white to black. You can draw and paint with them on paper and card, layering and blending the colours.

The palette runs from chrome yellow through reds and pinks to blue, green, violet and Vandyke brown. Use white to lighten colours and black to darken them. The set is compact enough for getting started with oil pastels, but it also works as a handy addition to other pastels.

Working with oil pastels

Apply the colour first with light pressure and build up further layers on top. To blend, lay two colours over each other and rub them together with your finger, a blending stump or a paper tissue. Use pressure and the tip of the stick for strong lines, and the flat side to cover areas. If you apply white last over other colours, you get soft, lighter transitions.

Storage and avoiding mistakes

Oil pastel stays greasy and smudges easily. Place a sheet of glassine or baking parchment between finished pieces before stacking them. Wipe the sticks on a cloth when changing colour, so that dark residue does not mix into light shades.
