A4 Papermaking Mould and Deckle – Make Your Own Sheets of Paper
With the A4 papermaking mould and deckle, you can make your own sheets of paper from waste paper or cellulose pulp. The two-piece wooden frame has a firm, fine plastic mesh. The fibres settle on the mesh while the water drains away. Because the frame is reusable, you can make as many sheets as you like, for example for greetings cards, school projects or the hobby workshop. It is also suitable for beginners.
The size of approx. 256 × 345 mm is designed for A4. At approx. 462 g, the frame sits comfortably in your hand, even when you make several sheets in a row.
How to make paper
The process from paper pulp to finished sheet:
- Prepare the pulp: soak waste paper or cellulose in water and tear it into small pieces
- Scooping: dip the frame into the pulp in the water basin and lift it out horizontally, letting the water drip off
- Couching: lay the wet paper on a felt cloth and press gently
- Pressing: press out more water with clamps or a press
- Drying: peel the paper from the felt and lay it flat
- Re-pressing and smoothing: press once more before it is completely dry and, if needed, smooth it with an iron at the end
Tips for even sheets
The fibres sink to the bottom of the basin, so stir the pulp briefly before each scoop. The more fibres there are in the water, the thicker the sheet will be. With a thin pulp you get finer paper. With a two-piece frame, the top frame section defines the edge of the sheet, which keeps the edge clean.
