Botz Liquid Glaze 9343 Flaschengrün – glossy, semi-transparent dark green

Flaschengrün (9343) is a classic Botz tile glaze for bisque-fired ceramics. It gives a rich, semi-transparent dark green with a glossy surface. The firing range is 1020–1060 °C, and the glaze is also suitable for raku.

Because the glaze is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay affects the result: on light clay the green stands out clearly, while on black clay the glaze shows no colour effect. It may run if applied thickly.

Applying the glaze

Apply the glaze with a brush to ceramics that have previously been bisque-fired at 950 °C or higher.

• Stir the glaze well and thin with a little water if needed
• Brush evenly onto the bisque-fired piece
• Leave to dry thoroughly and apply another coat if needed
• Fire within the firing range of 1020–1060 °C

Avoiding runs

Flaschengrün tends to run when applied thickly. It is therefore better to apply several thin coats rather than one thick one, and to leave the foot of the piece unglazed. As an extra precaution, protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash in case any glaze does run. A test piece made from your own clay shows in advance how the green looks on your clay body.
