Botz Liquid Glaze 9539 Goldaventurin – satin finish with metallic effects

The Botz liquid glaze Goldaventurin (9539) is a satin, semi-transparent brush-on glaze for bisque-fired ceramics. It forms metallic effects on a golden yellow base and crackles as it cools. It gives pots and decorative pieces a lively, shimmering surface. The glaze is liquid and ready to use, so you apply it straight from the pot with a brush.

A thin application produces more dark crystals, so the surface looks more speckled and textured. The crackle is part of this glaze: the glaze and the clay body shrink by different amounts as they cool, which produces fine cracks. Here they are a design feature, not a flaw.

Application

Apply the glaze only to bisque-fired ceramics that have been fired to at least 950 °C. Proceed as follows:

• Stir the glaze well before use to bring the settled particles back into suspension
• If needed, thin with a little water
• Apply to the bisque-fired ceramic with a brush
• Leave to dry thoroughly and, if needed, apply another coat
• Fire within the firing range of 1020–1060 °C

Controlling the effect and test tile

The number of dark crystals depends on the thickness of the layer: applied thinly, the glaze looks darker and more speckled, while with several coats the golden yellow base stays more visible. As the glaze is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay also affects the result. A test tile made from your own clay shows you beforehand how your application will look after firing. When firing, keep within the firing range in which the glaze is stable.
