Mayco Underglaze UG-230 Blue Grass – turquoise-green for ceramics, varies with firing
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-230 Blue Grass is an underglaze for ceramics. You can use it to decorate surfaces, lines and motifs before the piece is glazed. The shade sits in the turquoise-green range and shifts towards blue at higher firing temperatures. You can apply it to wet or leather-hard clay, to greenware and to bisque-fired ware. The bottle contains 59 ml.
Without an additional clear glaze, Blue Grass fires matt at cone 06 according to Mayco. If you want a more intense colour or a glossy result, apply a clear or matt clear glaze over the top.
Firing and colour effect
Mayco describes three firing results for Blue Grass. Because the colour shifts with temperature, it is worth making a test tile on your own clay before you decorate a whole piece.
- Cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising: matt without clear glaze. For a more intense colour or for dinnerware, apply a clear or matt clear glaze.
- Cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising: the colour turns blue. Recommended clear glaze: SW-001 Stoneware Clear.
- Cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), reducing: the colour shifts towards blue and becomes slightly darker. Recommended clear glaze: SW-001 Stoneware Clear.
Applying the underglaze
Shake the bottle well before use. Apply 2–3 coats and let each coat dry before applying the next. More coats make the colour more opaque; fewer are enough for lines and fine motifs. If you thin the underglaze with water, you get a watercolour effect. Mayco underglazes can be mixed with one another, so you can adjust the shade yourself.
Dinnerware and safety
For dinnerware, Blue Grass is only suitable under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze, the underglaze is not intended for dinnerware. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP seal means that no hazard labelling is required.
