Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-227 Speckled Sour Apple – glossy speckled glaze with blue flecks
Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-227 Speckled Sour Apple is a ready-to-brush speckled glaze with blue flecks, supplied in a 236 ml container. You apply it to bisque-fired ceramic. After firing it gives a glossy surface, and you do not need an additional clear glaze.
The consistency is slightly viscous, so the glaze brushes on easily. According to Mayco, the fired glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal means no hazard labelling is required. The glaze is suitable for earthenware and stoneware.
Application and firing
You control the opacity through the number of coats: one coat looks slightly transparent, while 2–3 coats give a strong, opaque finish. Let each coat dry before applying the next, and use a soft brush with even strokes. Keep the foot of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
- Apply to bisque-fired ceramic
- 1 coat: slightly transparent
- 2–3 coats: strong and opaque
- Firing range: cone 06 to cone 10
Effect at different firing temperatures
In a low firing at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the speckles stay clearly visible and add high-contrast accents. In a high firing, for example from cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the glaze stays opaque and colour-stable. A test tile made from your own clay shows you beforehand how the colour and speckles look with your firing programme.
Choosing from the range
SP-227 belongs to the Speckled series of Mayco Stroke & Coat, which is available in further colours and speckles. Choose this glaze if you want a lively, speckled surface in a single step.
