Botz stoneware glaze 98822 Blaugraueffekt is a liquid, glossy effect glaze for stoneware in the firing range 1220–1280 °C. It gives blue-grey to blue-green tones with visible effects. The surface looks textured to speckled and opaque. Fired within the firing range, the glaze becomes vitrified, absorbs no water and is frost-proof.

The glaze is prone to running. If you apply it unevenly, you get deliberate running effects; with an even application the result stays calmer. You decide which colour effect you get through the firing temperature.

Colour effect by firing temperature

The kiln temperature determines the colour impression. With a very thin application, the clay body may show through and the glaze may look brownish underneath.

• 1220 °C: subtle blue-grey to blue-green glaze with light effects
• 1250 °C: blue-grey to blue-green glaze with running effects
• 1280 °C: yellowish green with blue effects

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a brush in 2 to 3 coats, preferably 2. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Fire at 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold time.

Controlling the running

Because the glaze is prone to running, apply it more thinly on the lower third of the piece and leave the foot unglazed. This stops the glaze sticking to the kiln shelf. A test piece on your own clay shows you beforehand how strong the effects will be in your firing.
