Botz 9862 Wüstengelb stoneware glaze – satin matt pale yellow with fine effects
Botz stoneware glaze 9862 Wüstengelb is a satin matt, light glaze in pale yellow with fine effects. You fire it in the stoneware range from 1220 to 1280 °C. The pot contains 200 ml, which is enough for smaller pieces and test glazes.
The firing temperature determines how the glaze looks. At 1220 °C the colour is darker and richer, the surface more matt and the effects less pronounced. At 1250 °C you get a medium shade, the surface turns granite matt and the effects show to good advantage. At 1280 °C the yellow becomes lighter, the surface glossier and the effects at their strongest. If you want to emphasise the fine effects, fire towards the middle or the upper end of the firing range. For a stronger shade, choose 1220 °C.
Applying and firing the glaze
Apply the glaze to bisque-fired stoneware. Stir it thoroughly beforehand, as the particles settle in the pot. You will usually need 2 to 3 coats; for 9862, preferably 3. Let each coat dry well before applying the next. This makes the thickness more even and gives better coverage.
- Stir the glaze well
- Apply 2–3 coats with a brush, preferably 3, letting each dry in between
- Recommended: fire at 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold
- Wipe the foot ring and base clean so the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf
Which firing temperature suits your clay?
How colour and effects turn out also depends on the clay and the coat thickness. A test piece made from your clay will show you beforehand how Wüstengelb looks with it. Fire it at the temperature you intend to use later for the finished piece. Botz offers the stoneware glazes in this series in further shades, some of them also in 800 ml.
